“Periodontal disease” or simply “gum disease” is the major cause of adult tooth loss. Gum disease is caused by colorless and invisible bacteria in the mouth. Often times, Gum disease has no symptoms in the initial or even advanced cases. That is why it is called the “Silent Disease”. Patients may or may not notice bleeding gums even with gentle brushing of teeth. Gum disease is an inflammatory disease that if left untreated may lead to bone loss, bad breath, bleeding and eventual loss of teeth. It will also affect systemic health risks such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis, premature birth and a whole host of other health risks.
